We Are Still On!

Janine Hartsook (PUSH Cycling) leading Spinners at AirSprint hangar

COVID-19 has taken our attention hostage and altered our lives in unprecedented ways but it hasn’t stopped our battle against cancer. In fact, the realities of the novel coronavirus compel us to refocus our efforts to fight for the livelihood and well-being of our cancer champions and survivors. Spin For Life will be continuing in this mission no matter what.

Physical distancing and stay-at-home guidelines have meant the indefinite postponement and cancellation of most events scheduled throughout 2020. Many of these are cancer fundraisers that have been responsible for raising lifesaving research and care funds across the country. If those funds go un-raised it will mean drastic delays in research and support. Spin For Life is one of the few events that can safely continue in its mission, albeit while focusing on the digital experience and making forms of social gathering a bonus.

Spin For Life has always been a unique cancer fundraising event and these characteristics are why we can adapt better than most:

  • 100% of donations through Spin For Life go to the Canadian Cancer Society

Zero money gets taken off for event costs and within 3 days of when a donation is made the CCS has it in their bank account so they can use that money right away.

  • Digital and streaming content has always been part of the Spin For Life event experience

SFL has always strived to remove fundraising barriers by bringing participants indoors, onto stationary bikes, to unite in a digital journey around the world while raising funds for cancer research and care. We were always going to have cameras recording every bit of content while streaming it online so that supporters could enjoy the experience no matter where they are in the world.

COVID might keep us from gathering in large groups on October 17, 2020, but it won’t keep us from gathering digitally and raising needed funds for the CCS.

So, the whole Spin For Life team is focused on these (slightly) updated goals:

  • Keep fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society

They need our collective efforts now more than ever.

  • Make our online experience an over-the-top party

The digital Spin For Life experience will feature incredible spin instructors, shared cancer stories, and explorations of how your efforts save lives while adding in everything we can to keep the atmosphere of pumping music, jamming out together on the pedals, spinning around the world, and setting records.

  • Gather in whatever capacity we can

If we have to be individuals at home, we’ll gather digitally. If we can be in small groups, we’ll gather in spin studios and gyms. If we can go big, we’ll fill the AirSprint hangar as planned. No matter what we’ll have accessible digital content so that we can push this cancer journey forward together.

Thank you for continuing your support while being flexible in this pandemic.

Thank you for being the heroes of this adventure

We Are In This Together

Spin For Life values inclusion and removing barriers to entry for participation; any skill level, beginner to pro, is encouraged to join. There’s no need for any special equipment or gear – alongside 180 spin bikes, Spin For Life is equipped with low-impact floor and arm pedal machines. Spinners are in a controlled indoor environment where the risk is low, medical support is always close-at-hand, and the weather won’t affect the experience. Our participants’ physical and fundraising commitments are also designed to be manageable challenges: one hour of sweat with a minimum $1,000 raised for charity.

Thanks to our growing list of like-minded sponsors and patrons, 100% of donations stay with the Canadian Cancer Society. With each event, Spin For Life aims to raise a minimum of $1.44 million with new host cities being added every year for a ten year goal of $180 million. Tax receiptable donations can be allocated to any of three categories: Clinical Trials, Wheels of Hope, or the Alberta Cancer Research Fund (which was specially created to be funded by Spin For Life). Even in our first year, we are aiming to break the World Record for most money raised with a static cycling event.

Over the course of eight hours, our Spinners will collectively ride the circumference of the world: 40,075 km. Each hour is themed around distinct global landscapes with LED screens, theatre lighting, and mapped projections transporting participants through a beautiful, challenging, and cathartic experience. Emcees and Instructors will lead the music-filled Spin Hours, introducing stories of cancer heroes, researchers, clinicians, and remembrances of those we have lost. All culminating in a world record ceremony and on-site after party when we finish spinning around the globe!
